A South Bend man is accused of firing shots at a car on Interstate 80/94 Tuesday in Lake Station during a road rage exchange with another motorist, according to Indiana State Police.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. Tuesday and was reported by the victim, a 28-year-old Chicago man after he was involved in a confrontation with a man later identified as Emmanuel Antonio Ontiveros-Leyva, 24, of South Bend.
While traveling eastbound on I-80/94, the pair became involved in what Indiana State Police described as a road rage incident that involved “not letting the other car pass, flipping the driver off, etc.”
As the victim approached the Ripley Street exit, he pulled alongside Ontiveros-Leyva in the left lane when his back window exploded. When he looked to the left the man said he saw Ontiveros-Leyva was pointing what he believed to be a firearm at him and allegedly fired again.
The victim exited at the Toll Road and called 911.
Police stopped Ontiveros-Leyva at the Michigan City/LaPorte exit at mile marker 40.
Inside his black 1997 BMW police discovered an carbon dioxide powered BB gun that was made to look like a .45 semi automatic handgun. Ontiveros-Leyva was charged with criminal recklessness. Additional charges may be pending.
